we see that the function of ‘therefore’ isn’t only metapragmatic. As well as its procedural function in helping us to interpret the proposition in an appropriate context, ‘therefore’ also marks a formulation consequent on what has gone before and as such has a metasequential function. We shouldn’t be surprised to find that an expression has two functions – after all, speakers are simultaneously conveying pragmatic meanings and ensuring the procedural consequentiality of the talk exchanges or written discourse to which they are contributing.
